Maintenance

I've got a '95 D-90 and the service engine light just came on at ~52,000 miles for the emmissions service. 2 quick questions along these lines:

(1) The owners manual lists this emissions service as "critical" - anyone have any input on just how critical it is before I head down to the dealership and litterally blow my wad?

(2) There's word that the service engine light in a '95 can be reset by pushing a pin into a brown box behind the dash - is this true?, anyone have better instructions in terms of the location of the brown box?

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend - thanks for your help in advance.

Not sure how "critical" it is, but I think there is a reset button behind a sticker on the ECU or the ECU display.

I had the service completed at my local non-dealer shop for around $220. For what it is worth my gas mileage increased by about 15-20 miles per tank.

Michael,

I have no affiliation with this service center, but I heard good things:

Might take a little pressure off the old billfold...

Hmm I was charged $110 by the local dealer which they performed some kind cleaning, rest the light, and change the oil. If you take it to a dealer make sure they check the cats since they are covered up tp 80K miles.

Good luck,

Regarding reseting the light yourself just removed the gage cluster and you should see a small brown box with Land Rover sticker on it, remove the sticker and there is a small hole, use a small pin and insert in the hole (sorry but I couldn't say it any better)

service

If you can get him to look at it, Gord'n of G&S Services (out of Seattle, not too far from northgate) is the recommended guru. I took my 90 to him for a looksee right after I bought it and got the full tour.

There are about 20 things to do on the emissions service, IF you can get someone who will actually do them. Supposed to be either A) nothing changes, or B) one of the 20 things they do needed doing and thus running improves.
