M&D Eng UK 2.8 TDi VNT Engine experiences

Afternoon Everyone

I'm looking at one of these engines to power my LHD Tithonus. Does anyone have any experience with this Company Motor and Diesel Engineering UK and/or their engines which are purported to be very similar to the MWM International 2.8 HS engines, the Brazilian subsidiary of Navistar International.

Thanks in advance for any insights

Cheers

Several of us on the board have that engine. M&D is the primary supplier and SME of that engine in the Western English speaking world.

While the engine is undoubtedly more powerful than the 300 TDI, as well as supposedly some better engineering improvements to make it more reliable than the 300 TDI, I have personally had some unfortunate setbacks early on with mine that lead me ultimately to an early full rebuild by Safari HP only recently completed.

The engine shares many components with the 300 TDI, but not all, and those differences are poorly documented. I started a thread a while back on 2.8 TGV parts compatibility for a place to documents those commonalities.

If you have one installed, make sure it's timed correctly on installation. Don't assume it was done correctly from the factory. I have a cracked head in my first 30k miles. Also make sure you have a knowledgeable Rover diesel mechanic identified (that is credible) before committing. There are enough nuances between the 2.8 and 300tdi, to let an unexperienced mechanic following the LR 300 TDI manual to get you into trouble.

From a parts availability side, I also posted a link on a Brazilian supplier, that can supply 2.8 parts around the same cost as 300 TDI parts. Majority of parts from M&D will end up double the cost of 300 TDI parts.

M&D sells the International engines. They have not been in production for a few years now, so I don't think they have new ones.

Can you please go into a little more detail about the setbacks experienced as I'm not a professional mechanic and I don't really know anyone in the Houston Area that is trained on 300TDis, so this would be of great interest, if these were preventable issues.

Thanks in advance

Fraser

if you order a complete engine from them now, they actually build one from parts using a 300 TDI block and their 2.8 conversion kit (with correct sized pistons, etc) and it requires a month lead time. It's not a pure 2.8.

I've been told there is an indie LR shop in Spring, TX that is familiar with the 300Tdi. Don't know if they are knowledgeable on the 2.8.

I had a number of issues with my 2.8 that forced me to regret the conversion. But Pendy has promised that I will be very happy with it when he is finished with rebuilding it.

Luis

Same question then, what were the issues, please share, that was my whole purpose for asking this question.

Thanks in advance

Reading M&d site, looks like they are taking 300tdi's and rebuilding them into 2.8 litre engines. That could well be the solution to the International's problems, plus parts availability to!

No info related to the 2.8 or 300tdi;however, I use M&D regularly for parts on the mama sl35ti. They are a top notch business. Call, ask for parts, give CC info, get parts quickly. They aren't a clown show.

I've been using my 2.8 for 11 years now with around 50K miles. Have only had minor maintenance, and recently did the headgasket due to age. No major issues. I have noticed that historically, this engine really, really does not like being overheated (reading through the history of issues on them). Putting it in a 110, I would focus on the cooling extensively.

Going further, I recommend to anyone considering that a 4 core radiator is mandatory. These generate quite a bit more heat, and summer days in lower latitudes on the highway will creep up from heat soak on a stock 3 core.

Hi Fraser,

I ordered my 2.8TgV in 2005 from M&D. Put it in in my driveway. It
bolted right up to the R380 and used the same engine mounts as the V8.
So far I have 75K miles and the only issues I've had is a clogged fuel filter
(cause I was a diesel newbie) and the bearing went out on the belt tensioner.
I've been very happy with it. Tons of torque and will run 70mph all day on the highway.
I ordered the HD radiator when I got it and have had no overheating problems.

With all this being said, your mileage my vary. I've read other people on here that
have had problems but my experience has only been positive.

Good luck.
Bryan

also note that M&D does use some Britparts for their kit. My fuel filter housing failed within the first year of install, leaving me stranded at work. I would recommend going genuine or performance aftermarket for components that will disable you. i installed a heated racor, and very happy.

Safari also told me they have had numerous vibration issues with the Britpart engine mounts provided in the M&D kit. they replaced with genuine to resolve in all cases.

I have the International MWM HS2.8L M&D Kit on my Disco with Autobox.
I, too, first installed it my self back in 2005.

Incredible engine, and by coincidence, I am selling one.

Asking $8800 for the Kit. would it be for the d-90 ?
Asking $9800 for the whole truck which has some very nice HD parts including old-school Kam-diff lever operated rear locker.
