Just back from a 600 mi (round trip) road trip with the wife's LR4. Started out smooth and by last couple hours the ride got worse. Most notably, it was kind of bouncy at ~40-60 mph. Responsiveness has gone downhill too. I am inclined to think the bushings/ball joints may need replacing- so I would opt for complete control arms if I did this job myself. Tire pressure is fine. The truck has 83,000 mi, of which we've only owned it for ~15k. No other history of lca replacement that I am aware of (I know it's time then if it hasn't been done).
Haven't had a chance to get under it yet. Anyone with any suggestions or things to check when I can it up in the air?
Ugh... not looking forward to this repair. I may need to outsource this one in the interest of time.
I just did a LR3 front lower control arms change, did it in nine hours but that was reusing the arms but fitted ploybushings. So it took abit to get the old ones out.
But as you say the ride was betting horrable, are you getting humping noises when going over bumps and or when going slowly and applying the brakes? that's the sign the the lower rear bush is past it (on the front wheels)
there a good video on British Atlantic doing this.one tip remove the bloody mud guard your elbows will thank you, it's not called a funny bone for nothing.
Hard to quantify 'bouncy' lol. Honestly we found ourselves wondering if the road was funny or if it was rover. It didn't go away with changing roads. It's definitely not sitting on the bump stops. Air suspension goes up and down as needed. What's your thought?
I just had my LR4 in the dealership to do other maintenance and had them re calibrate the suspension. We had some rough ride and movement when at stop. They didn't find anything wrong but appears to have fixed the issues. Less than 20K for miles so it's still under warranty but worth a look before replacing bushings and the like.
I had several software updates over the past year that LR suggested but only when you ask the dealership to check for them. Auto lights, ECO mode, etc...
For posterity: bushings shocks, airbags all seem fine. The culprit is the back left tire. My FIL made a crucial diagnosis over the phone. According to him bouncyness felt in the seat is from a rear tire, while felt more in the wheel is from the front. Sure enough I swapped the spare to the back left tire and smooth ride was restored.
Tire has plenty of tread and pressure but I suspect a separated belt... glad it wasn't a blowout...
Dragging up a old post here... But...
I have a LR4 owned it for around 4 months now. 64000 miles on the clock.
The car has been fine (absolutely fine) however... ?
I travelled to my brothers up north, lovely 3 plus drive! Since coming back I have noticed the car sort of wobbles? ? Anywhere up to 30mph ish... Cant notice it at speed! Really annoying at 20ish mph! It's almost as if a wheels buckled? Or not on right? If that makes sense... I thought of doing the bushings as suggested by a mechanic friend! But these seem fine as post above.
Any suggestions? Should I try as above.. Tyre shop? ?
Cheers for the reply.. I've checked the control arm bushes and they seem fine. But will have another dig around.. Might get it to the local shop and have the wheels aligned and balanced! Any recommendations? Ie place to go? Big chain name? Also does it have to be a dedicated alignment? As it's air bags etc? Thanks again!
Anyone should be able to balance the wheels and align it. I’ve only had issue with stew wheels because most places don’t have the equipment to balance them correctly.
