LR3 Clock Spring Recall Experiences

Anyone here go through the process of replacing/repairing the 2005-06 LR3 Clock Spring Recall. My understanding is there is a recall if the vehicle vin falls with in a certain range. Before I call to discuss with the dealer I'd like to know what others have experienced so as to gauge the level of BS I can expect from Hosem'all of Chantilly or Tysons.

Thanks
Clay

Call them and tell them you need to know if there are any open recalls on your vehicle. I don't know what kind of BS they could give you. They will need the last eight of your VIN.

Called dealer and they said the clock spring was replaced under warranty so they suggest I bring them the truck and they'll run the codes for $189 to make sure it's really the clock spring and not a handful if other possibilities. Recall repairs are only pro bono once in a lifetime as luck would have it of course. That's the dealership BS I was talking about. $56k truck can't make it 50,000 miles without needing $500 BS repairs like clock springs.

I'd put the $189 towards a nanocom so you can read your own codes.

Is this the device and where is the best place to purchase?

That's the one. There is a shop link at the top. Sometimes they have good sales. I bought mine for 20% off just before the new year. There is also someone that started a thread on here about getting a group discount.

The canbus support is brand new as of January, so they are actively developing and adding new features. Currently it will read and clear codes on most everything, update software of most of the computers, configure the EAS, calibrate the TCCM, work with parking brake, and view SOME live data. There are other features in the works. I've been very pleased. You can also get licenses for older vehicles, like D2 and P38.

No input on the clock spring issue (knock on wood, not a problem yet) but I've had good experience with Chantilly (compared to Alexandria).

I hear the SRS light can also be due to a weak battery in addition to the failure of a seat belt mechanism. Anyone experience codes being thrown due to a weakening battery?

Weak battery will def throw some codes. We had a bunch of traction control and trans faults from a weak battery. Replaced the battery and faults went away.

Also I have a spare seatbelt mechanism if you want to try it to see if that clears the code. If you need one I'd let if go for a reasonable price

It's a rotary connector mounted at the steering wheel.

It connects the SRS, horn and steering wheel controls to the electrical system of the vehicle.

Paul, I'll lick that. I just had my battery/system tested which shows all is charging very well but the battery itself needs to be recharged. I'm going to trickle charge it over night and go from there. If I find a full charges battery will not do the trick the next step is the seatbelt thingamajig.

Seatbelt thingy licked if trickle charging my battery overnight tonight doesn't do the trick. Charging system is doing its part but the battery tested a little low.

Thanks Paul

What problems/warning messages are you having? Brake light switch can make the truck go crazy too

Just the SRS light. Dealer says prior owner had the clock spring replaced under warranty so they won't do so again under recall notice.

The SRS light is also know to pop on if the battery is weak and/or seatbelt mechanism is worn.

I'm starting on the low end of the cost-to-fix spectrum and planning to move up from there if possible. The charging system tests fine but the battery is a bit low. I'm gonna trickle charge the battery overnight and see if that does the trick. If not, move on to the seat belt and then the clock spring. Then CarMax. jk.

Def check the battery charge like you're doing, they seem to be pretty hard on them just due to the amount of systems that it has.

If not CarMax there is always Craigslist!

Nothing has been ruled out. Battery can't hold more that 400 cca so ordering a new one.
