LR3 as a tow vehichle

Looking at adding an LR3 to the garage and had the thought that we could use it to tow the 90 to Moab and other destinations. Seems like it would have the ability but I don't have a ton of experience towing.

I'd think it would be a great tow vehicle. Got a bunch of "tow vehicle" of the year awards across the pond.

I've towed a hydraulic dump trailer, the 88, the 110, 25' Baja boat, and the list goes on. Never had an issue, and every one of the aforementioned ended with towing it up a windy mountain road to our place in the Adirondacks...again, with no issue at all. It's a great vehicle to tow with, you barely know anything is back there (granted, a proper trailer makes a difference to this).

I've not towed with one but one of the guys I wheel with towed his disco from tennesee to central nc with his. I imagine his disco and trailer is close to 7500lbs. He said it does fine, transmission hunts for gears quite a bit unless in, manual mode.

I use mine for towing a double axle 18' full deck steel Appalachian trailer (about 1800#) and a built D1, Kubota, construction materials, friends Rovers, even pulled another LR3 last week.
I leave the transmission in sport mode- it raises the shift points. Trailer brakes are easy as the Rover is pre-wired. An F150 adaptor connects the brake controller to the LR3 under the dash very easily.
The tow hitch arrangement caused me to invert a drop a hitch to get the correct height, so invest in a good quality drop hitch.
The LR3 does a great job. I've had the opportunity to trailer the same set-up with 3/4 ton and 1 ton Fords/Chevys/ Dodge with diesels and the additional torque is addicting, but I'm still pleased with my LR3's capabilities.

Towed my 23 foot boat with it (which is heavier than the D90) and it did fine.

I think the key point is to watch the weight of the trailer...too over-built of a trailer could add enough weight to make it not tow as well...

(every time I think towing...I miss my 7.3L PowerStroke Excursion :-( )

The LR3 is the best tow rig I've used. This one was easy!

Could have put that in the rear hatch.. Very rarely does the trailer weigh more than the car..

Bill:

It towed quite well, but not nearly as well as the LR3. Figures, since the LR3 has a longer wheelbase, and a lot more power. Of course, you'll only notice it at the upper end of the tow weight.

Lol! We actually towed the same trailer to Portland with my wifes '11 Mini Countryman on it. LR did just fine.
