Loose steering

I tightened the box and with the front end off the ground when I turn the steering wheel the movement is transfered to the wheels. With the front end down and the steering wheel is turned there is significant slack int the steering, maybe 2+ inches. Could it be the tie rod ball joints? If so, easy fix. Any other tests I should be trying?

With that much slack, if it's the ball joints it should be visible if somebody watches them while you steer at a stop. You would see the tie rod move but the knuckles not moving. Could also be in the box itself, the rag joint in the steering shaft between the steering wheel and the box, also check the joint at the end of the steering arm attached to the box.

Myself, I'd check that ball joint on the steering arm first. Again, if it's THAT loose it should be easily visible.

Hans,

Thanks for your input. I never seem to have anyone around to help. Guess I need to make more friends. I will find someone to turn the wheel while I check it out. Ball joins are cheap and I am hoping that is the main problem.

Thanks again,

Kevin
