Long distance buying advice

Hi all,

First, thanks to everybody who posts frequently to this board. I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on my first D90 purchase and the information I've found on this site has been invaluable. After a couple months of searching, I found a red 97 SW that looks like it could be a good option for me. The only problem is that it's 2,000 miles away in Malibu CA.

I've spent quite a bit of time talking to the seller and putting together a full service history for the vehicle. However, I know there's no substitute for an in-person inspection. Given that I'm about as qualified to perform a D90 inspection as I am a heart transplant, I could use some advice on the best way to verify the condition of the vehicle. With that in mind, I have 2 questions:

1) Has anybody worked with a national inspection company (e.g., Automobile Inspections LLC, SGS) that they found to be particularly good?

2) Is there anybody who lives near Malibu and is familiar with D90s who is willing to take a look at the vehicle? Please be sure to name your favorite brand of alcohol so I can make it worth your while.

Thank you!

There are a few of us that are pretty close and me or any of them would probably be more than happy to take a look. I would actually have it inspected by a Rover shop seeing as this isn't your everyday Honda Civic. PM me and I can give you some more info.

Post up the VIN and/or the badge number and most likely someone on the board here knows the truck.

Help me a ton when buying my last 90...

and make sure you drive it home if you buy it...there is NOTHING like a cross country trip in a 90!

Badge #273. Anybody know it?

I'm actually considering the road trip. Just need to see if I can make the timing work.

Looks like it's had about 4 owners, passed around the auctions a few times, etc. Pretty normal.

x2 on the LR garage inspection as opposed to that generic one you posted.

I would definitely have it inspected and have someone like Brian or me look at it. I will be brutally honest.

honestly,

being some one who bought a truck long distance and looked at pics and talked to the owner.

I would have someone who is very familiar give an honest assessment, or I would just fork out the money for a plane ticket.

once you but it , its all yours and so are all the problems with it.

I just spent over 20k to make my truck unfucked from pics that made it look like a low miles copley truck.

just an echo... there are several of us that would be happy to look at it and tell you if it's worth getting or if it's just junk you'll regret...

I will be brutally honest. I bought my blue truck long distance and at the time it had 45k miles on it and was really nice but still what comes off in pictures is never what you really get. You need someone to look at it and say this is what I think. I can't give you an assessment mechanically but I sure as hell can tell ig if had paint work done, if things aren't original, rust, wear, etc.

Yep, pictures always lie. I've purchased two Rovers out of state. Got lucky on one. Not as lucky on the other even after I had someone look at it. Basically the guy wasn't as anal as me or Barry would be. So, I too would not tell you any BS about it. I would give you the cold, hard truth. I do agree with flying out to take a look yourself though. Only you know what you can live with.

Yes I would trust Brian over me too. Even though and Brian will admit this I am 100% nuts with what I consider OK. I have been known to redo a badge plate multiple times as I saw a fleck of dust in the paint.

I also had my blue truck looked at by land rover orlando. They told me over the phone no need to go over it, it looks awesome.

Granted I love my truck but I would never buy anything without either seeing it in person or having someone I trust look at it.

I got lucky. found my truck here on the D-90 source, chatted with the owner online for a few days, got a cashiers check for 20k and a one way plane ticket.Presto !
If you need someone nearby to pick it up for you, i'd love do it for you,say a plane or bus ticket and a few hundred bucks.

Call Larry at 4 oaks garage in Santa Monica and have him inspect it for your you. Then tell barry and brian when its there to go have a look. Its worth the 100 bucks or whatever he charges.
