Sounds like you need a new ignition switch cylinder. If you can't forcefully remove the key, you might have to get a new ignition switch cylinder. (They come with a new new ignition key) Try removing the plastic shroud, spray some WD40 in the hole and give it a few taps. If that don't work go to plan A

your key has a slight twist and the ignition doesn't like it, prob from unlocking doors. Disconnect the battery and turn the key as to start it and push just a bit more than usual....you'll feel it. then it should just come out. It may be time for a new key or just put it in a doorlock and straighten it every now and then...works for me.

This may sound simplistic, but try turning your steering wheel back and forth as you pull on the key.

Before getting too drastic, definitely try Rod's advice. My key feels stuck frequently, and all it takes to free is rotating the steering wheel a tiny bit counter-clockwise. You could also try jiggling the gearshift, if yours is an automatic.

I have used my ignition key for the door lock a few times. You have to use the "jiggle" method to get it to turn (insert key, jiggle vigorously while trying to turn/unlock). It works like a charm, every time.

Back in high school, I discoverd the side door key to my parents' house would start a friend's '63 Jaguar XKE roadster (btw, one of my favorite cars of all time).

Trevor--it is on my classic list as well. A cool site you might like: http://www.mckennasgarage.com/xke/index.htm

Sorry for the hijack, folks.

Ont he plus side, Oscar, replacing the key/ignition is simple to do. My truck's ignition key is totally different from the door keys, however.

Oscar-

I have a 97 w/ automatic trans and sometimes I have to push the shifter a little further than the Park marked on the shifter sheet to get the key to release. If you have a manual I have no idea. Where about are you in Corona? I'm in Riverside just down the road.

One other thing to check if its an 97 auto D90, (while in Park) take a small knife or flat head screw driver and pop off the center cap on the top of the shifter. In there you will see a small switch that engages when you shift. Once in a while that wont fully return to the safe position when you put it into Park and wont allow you to remove the key. Use the knife or screw driver and just help it back up into place and your key should remove. Mine was doing that once in a while and its just not clicking fully into its safe setting. A little WD40 fixed it up for me.

Hey Chris, thanks for that tip, I think I'll give that a try as I have to really push the shifter forward to get my key out.

David, mostly a lurker on this site, but love to get out to the local mountains as time allows. My D is a little too much of a queen for the hammers so I defer to my Zuk for those rock oriented excursions! Still trying to figure out how to get my D to climb a light pole

Oscar, let me know if you want me to try and lend a hand. I'm not too good with mechanical stuff, but really know how to sympathize with Defender problems!
