Just a thought....

Has anyone considered taking their defender into mexico to a dealer or service center and gaining access to all the puma and older parts one might ever need or want and then just driving it back into california or texas after its service? Fishing in Baha anyone? Has anyone done this? Convoy?

Do you have guns mounted on your defender?

if by "mounted" you mean strategically placed throughout, so as to provide for quick presentation in the event of trouble...

yes.

this is an interesting question, though. does no one have experience sourcing parts/labor in mexico?

I think what he means is if you plan on driving down to Mexico and "pimp your ride" You had better have a .50 cal mounted to the roof for the ride back or else some trigger happy Bandito will relieve you of your possessions while you are traveling through an unsavory area

The Baja is safe, we just got back from 4 day's in Puerta Penasco with ZERO problems...I travelled Mexico alot and have had no problems what so ever..as for pimping your ride, nothing even close to border, all the dealerships are aroung Mexico City and I think there's one near Montery...and bringing a weapon will definitetly land you a permanent vacation in a choice mexican hotel...

I am with Frank on that one. TJ is right across the border but we cross at Mexicali as it it safer. I haven't heard of any dealerships down in TJ but have seen up close a new 110 SVX edition with Baja Plates roaming around San Diego. I think if you really wanted to go to that trouble might as well poke around on craigslist Costa Rica as there appears to be a lot of defenders down there.

In the 80's customs was wise to people driving beat up VW bugs south and having them "restored". I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were wise to Land Rovers.
