Is an engine swap a do-it-yourself job?

I found a 4.2 long block to replace the 3.9 and was wondering if doing the swap myself (provided I get my hands on an engine hoist) was something I would later regret or should I just let the mechanics do it. I thought I would ask the folks here before I let the mechanic talk me out of doing it. Are there any things in particular that I should watch out for? Maybe some snags that someone here has encountered that I should know about? Do the alternator, compressor, etc have to be attached differently and are the wiring harness connections the same on both engines. I mean are they truly identical engines except for greater CID. Any advice would be appreciated.

It is nice to have an extra pair of hands when moving heavy things like a motor. Even though you have a hoist - you will still need a little muscle to get things lined up and to help with the occasional top / bottom bolts.

It can be done, but like David says, another pair of hands really helps. I always end up doing swaps on my own though.

Alterantor, compressor, wiring harness is all the same. Put on a new clutch. And yes, it's really a DIY job assuming you have two helping hands

Yep mostly done them myself, Dunsfold Land Rovers did my first tdi swap though - I had nowhere to work on it at the time.

Not a huge deal. Make sure to get a big hoist and/or drop the front end down or remove it.

Also, an impact gun with some long extensions (18-24in cobbled together) with a u-joint fitting on the end makes the transmission bolts 10x easier.
