Instrument Panel Cluster Replacement

I need to replace the entire instrument cluster to pass Virginia Vehicle Inspection. Any ideas where I can get a used cluster for a 97 D90?

Odometer, Speedometer is not longer working. The brake light goes off and on along with the trailer light.

Why not just get a VDO programmable speedometer to replace the stock unit?

It's lurking around the Source somewhere.

The most likely culprit for the brake light is a short. The sensor that communicates with the idoit light is located under the boot of the brake. Simply retract the boot and you'll see the sensor. Chances are the wire has erroded from the brake being applied. Just splice it back together and position it away from the handles joint.

The trailer light could be a number of things. Have you spliced any lights into the main harness, i.e. did you attach additional blinkers; possibly froma ARB bumper?

the VDO is 100 times better then the stock one as well. and you can adjust it for tire size to read accurate. You will then want to change the other 3 too the VDO because it looks so much better..

I got a chance to check out Gregg's truck yesterday. Pretty sweet looking - black with full roof rack, ARB lockers and a 4.6 conversion by ECR.

We pulled the instrument cluster and one of the harness connections was loose and that solved the flasher/brake light issue. He really only has 2 remaining issues that I could tell, and one probably not related to this thread

1. The odometer/lcd portion of the speedometer isn't working. The harness plug show some kind of voltage across the pins, the lcd backlight comes one when the lights are on, and the actual speedometer works, and the vehicle runs fine so I think the VSS etc are fine. So I can only assume this means a gauge replacement.

2. When he first starts it up he has to give it gas for a couple of seconds or it just dies. But after giving it gas for a few, it figures out the idle speed just fine and is fine. I have no clue on this one. Is it possible that it needs a working speedo to get it's initial idle right? doesn't seem likely to me as I could start the truck without the speedo hooked up.

I checked out the VDO thread, and it looks pretty straight forward for a 1997 if you want to go with a VDO swap if you can't find a cheap LR one. Let me know if you want help doing that. Once you get passed inspection, I'd be game to try bump the mileage recorded on the odometer. I have a friend who is much better than me with electronics and could easily setup a circuit to send it a pulse and rack up some miles.
