installing a new snap

Does anyone have any advise regarding installing a new snap? I picked up a punch tool from the hardware store, but with a little more research I am seeing there are some snap tools i.e. a vice grip type of tool and another that looks like a hand rivet tool.
What do you use and like?
I would rather get something that is good quality and will last.
I am also wondering if I should go with Stainless Snaps vs. Crome plated Bronze
