In the field question

Out in the middle of nowhere, barely cell service. Went over rr tracks while letting out clutch and heard a pop

Now 90 will only go with transfer case engaged.

Clutch and tranny seem fine but really clunking under there.

Thoughts?

Can't search because of spotty service.

Thanks Board!

You broke a rear driveshaft. The short one usually goes first. You can drive it home with the CDL engaged, no problem.

I have to ask, how fast were you going?
It wasn't one of those smooth tracks but but one that jars your fillings lose wasn't it?

If it moves with transfer case engaged, I'm going to say possibly a broken axle or in that vicinity. Just guessing.

Where does the noise appear to be coming from?

I never consider any strong burning smell good.
What kind of smell? Fluid, electrical, material?

I think by "drive shaft" they really mean the half shafts in the rear axle. You can pull them out, you just need to tape up the half shaft "holes" (behind your wheels) to keep dirt out until you get home.

I also think you mean to say that you have the transfer case in "diff-lock" in order to have forward motion.

Yes half shaft, sorry. CDL == center diff lock.

You can typically not worry about removing them for a short distance as the breaks are pretty clean.

well, made it home, attacked by gremlins tho..

Sheesh, first long(ish) trip, about 200 miles and several gremlins popped up:

1. The lights in the dash warning panel started flashing randomly, seat belt, brake, aux lights(even tho I have none) chime etc. There seemed to be 2 loose relays under the passenger seat. 1 was hot. pushed them down and seemed to take care of issue...until I got close to house...

2. Aforementioned clutch/tran/driveshaft issue. loud pop going over teeth rattling rr tracks and shifting at same time. Dumb mistake. Now only goes forward with CDL engaged. Still making a clunking sound as I slow down with or without clutch engaged. Sounds like someone going from side to side with a pipe under there as I slow down and with no torque on drive line.

3. Annnd right when all of these guys were admiring and looking at truck, ignition switch decides to go out. no lights, no nothing unless I faced east, jiggled key and called upon the Lord of Darkness himself. Finally got key in just right spot to get it started. Had to "tug" on key while driving to keep power. Assuming this is a simple replace of ignition/key part.

Thanks for the quick replies guys!

Any thoughts, kindly let me know!

KCD

Smell seemed to be "fluid" in nature and really only happened if I went over 70. Clutch was full when I got home.
