Patrick, there is NO legal way to do what you want to do. The only way that is even remotely legal is to buy a vehicle, have it dismantled, bring it in as parts, and put it back together as a "kit car". Even then, it is not 100% legal, because the engine will not, or does not meet EPA specs. Also, only a few states will allow you to register the car. Do yourself a favor and get a NAS90. Prices are reasonable enough on those now that noone should risk going to prison over a 90-- 110 maybe . Honestly, I have wasted so many hours doing research on this, and the above is the only way to do it "legally".

Lots of misconceptions about importing. I have actually done it but not with a Defender. Follow the link to my story about importing my BMW from Germany. Also, the NHTSA has all the rules listed on their site. Currently only the 1993 D110 has an importation eligibility number.

Heres the bottom line:
You will only be able to import up to MY 1995 without running afoul of OBDII requirements.
Newer than 1997 needs airbags
Any year requires rigourous emissions testing
This will cost you a minimum of 10,000 dollars

You can import a 1993 D110, if it has been converted to NA spec, by a REGISTERED IMPORTER. Basically, it has to be exactly like the 1993 NAS 110, with the 3.9L V8. You could try and bring a diesel in, but like Jim said, you would have to pay out the ying-yang for emissions testing. So basically you would probably end up with $50k-$60k in a vehcile that is worth less than the NAS 110's. At this point, you can't import the 95 or 97 D90. You would have to petition NHTSA, which costs a couple of hundred bucks, and this does not guarantee a yes. Like I said, there are too many good deals running around to have to worry about all of this crap, especially for a D90.

Thank you all for your info on importing a new D-90. Sounds like I'll need to keep my search in the US.
