Importing a Defender 90 into the U.S.

I am in the process of trying to purchase a 1984 Defender 90 in Germany and bring it home to the U.S. Age wise, it will pass through customs, as I was told by CBP that it's not an issue. The problem could be that the engine is a refurbished 300 TDI that could be from a mid-90s Defender. Can someone give advice as to what my best course of action, if any, of being able to import this home? Thanks.

You can't import it with the 300TDI. It must have the same type engine that was in it originally in order to import.

My advice would be not to listen to CBP. Officer Christopher is probably just looking for his 30 Defenders Seized merit badge.

It should go without saying, but, put an original engine in it prior to import.

off course you cant import a defender with not an original frame or engine in it.
you can import a 2.5d or petrol,a 3.5 v8,a 2.5 td or one of the first 200tdi in a few month!

Yep. Has to be 25 years old and in original condition with no modifications.

Yes that means finding the original spec engine, whatever that might be, and installing it before it ships.

Some have gotten lucky and some have slipped through the customs people but I would think those days are numbered if they haven't already disappeared.

more easy to find an original car than to put in it an old engine.
1984,it was a diesel and i dont know the price you got it ,but perhaps better to find a td or better a tdi?
all engine you will find will be old and surely not a good plan.

I hope it's not the blue one sitting on the lemon lot at Ramstein Air Base right now. That thing is a crushing looking for a place to happen.

Do not buy that particular truck. As said above it is not legal for import here.
