Importing a 110 from Europe- odometer question

I am considering importing a 1990 d100 from europe and was wondering about the speedo and odometer. Does anyone have any experience with this ? The truck I am looking at has a speedo reading in KM only and the odometer reads in KM.
My wish is to convert this to MPH and a odometer that reads in miles. Can this be done "correctly", meaning I suppose legally? Can the new odometer be set to correct mileage? (converted from KM) My guess is that it comes down to documentation but was looking for some advice.
Thanks in advance.

I believe requirements to change are state based.

I would suggest getting a VDO. VDO will program the odometer for you for free. Just take photos and document the change.

Thank you Red90.

Follow up question...

Can a oem or re-manufactured speedo be set to correct mileage or do they just start at zero?

By "program" John meant "set to correct mileage".

For an analog speedo any speedo repair shop in your town should be able to set it correctly. The shop by my house quoted $50. For a VDO speedo as John said they will do it.

IMHO, who cares? There is a reasonable chance of your speedo being incorrect already. How many defenders do you know that don't have working speedos? I don't care what the speedo says when considering a purchase of a +25 year ROW Defender. True Mileage Unknown works for me... in this case.

X2 Kinda what I was thinking, better than even chance the mileage is wrong.

No problem on the import. I just did the conversion, and asked them which number they wanted.

Scott not sure why you want to convert it - convenience I suppose, which I totally understand. I still have my KPH gauge. All I did was GPS the speeds so I know approximately what I am running down the road.

The speedo's are calibrated from the transferbox end, so you can just swap the "heads" over. If it's a 1990 then I suspect it's a mechanical type, not the electronic like NAS and Td5 have.

You may find one on ebay with a similar mileage, and you can just (if you're careful) lever off the crimp of the surrounding bezel, open the unit up and adjust the dials yourself to alter then mileage, then crimp the bezel back on.

Look up vdo replacement here,
The VDO service centers can adjust the MPH speedo to read the same converted mileage as your Kph one, and do it correctly in the eyes of the law. Plus it's a better speedo unit.

Not sure about other states but here in WI, any vehicle over 10 years old, the mileage doesn't matter anyway. You are no longer required to report the mileage and the title will just say "exempt."
