Importing 2008 Defender SVX - Import to US

Hi everyone!

I am assuming this has been discussed at length in this forum. I have researched the forum online and realize it will be very difficult, but am not 100% if it is impossible.

I want a 2008 Defender SVX 90 softop extremely badly. I am willing to deal with a crazy level of annoying bureaucracy and am willing to pay extra. I have seen some possibilities of custom building cars with old Defender chassis but i am concerned about the quality.

I am looking for anyway to import it, so my main questions are:

1. Can I somehow import it as a show car? My father has a separate garage that he converted to collect cars, so maybe i can use this to import it?

2. If I can somehow bring it, but cannot register it, is there some way to customize it once its here in order to pass emissions to get it registered. I live in CT.

Not much research was done on your part.

But to cut to the chase. From what I have seen, Mark at Himalaya seems to have SVX parts. I would contact him and see if you could have him build you a legal 90 to SVX spec, other than that, you just have to wait until the SVX is 25 years old to legally import it without having to spend millions on crash testing and emissions testing.

Contact Will H. See if it would be possible to bring it under the Show and display exemption.

i hope you're rich! show and display is the fantasy of the naive, although if anyone could help you out with that it would be will.

Good luck selling the truck to anyone under show and display. Again, I hope you're wealthy.

How To Import A Motor Vehicle For Show Or Display

"4. Whether more than 500 of the vehicles were produced.

If the answer to any of the above is affirmative, you should not expect NHTSA to grant permission for importation. If the answer to item 4 is affirmative, the applicant must establish that the vehicle is of exceptional technological and/or historical significance."

Online sources are saying 1600 were made, which doesn't help the case.

"There are 1800 cars built worldwide and 300 built for the UK"

So maybe i could push that only 300 right handed ones were made

Buy a legal ROW 90 (like are for sale on the forum here) and ship it to Safari HP or one of the other reputable shops, source the parts, have them build you one and drop and LS in that puppy and off you go all legit not worrying about running afoul of the government.

It's much easier to build what you want. That's what I'm doing. Time consuming and expensive but better than dealing with bureaucracy. 90's are easy to find. Just restore one and add the SVX parts. If you ever get tired of it you can sell it.

Yeah build one yourself starting with a legal truck already in the US. I think you'll appreciate the truck a lot more and you'll learn all about it. You can get the EPA approved 3.2l version of the Puma diesel from a Ford dealer (for a Ford Transit), or something else that'll bolt up to the MT82 like the 4-cyl Ecoboost or Coyote V8 (for a Mustang). Ford sells wiring kits for their crate engines.

Not too hard to replicate the truck legally with an older chassis, especially if you have the cash to do it right. Defenders are just legos for adults. "Special vehicles" are just a different parts bin.

I am going to research the Puma diesel engine, possibly over a 300tdi swap. I have a lot to learn when I hopefully get my truck stateside sometime this summer.

Here's a US Puma diesel engine from a wrecked Transit with 10k miles for $4k.
