Import question

I know there are many people here knwoing a lot about bringing a Defender in the country. A question to all those specialists.

When I moved from The Netherlands to US I brought two of my Defenders. Registering them was very easy because of the 25 year rule and also because both of these cars had a Dutch registration in my name.

I am now thinking of importing an ex-MOD car. It doesn't have any European registration only a release document from the army. This shows it is an 1986 car. Would this document be enough to import this in the US or should I first go through the European proces and get a title in Holland and only then bring it over ?

It would save me a lot of time and money if this MOD document would be enough.

As a person who hates the MVA, or DMV, or whatever they call it in your state.... Spend an afternoon and go there and ask all your questions. It's such a bureacracy there and you better find out for yourself first hand what exactly you need to do.

I bought a trailer with the title... but because 3 owners before me hadn't done the right paperwork in ANOTHER state... I couldn't get it titled in my state. the lady's like find the previous owner and have them go to their mva. I'm like huh? You want me to go hunt down some random guy in texas (i'm from maryland) to tell him to go to his mva? I told the lady she was on crack.

Dunno if you can get it titled as a military, historic or special vehicle, but worth a try. As such you're supposed to be restricted in how you use it and insurance is a little weird, but it's a way. Once it's past the 25 year time you might be able to retitle it as a road vehicle.

x2 on going to your local DMV for more information. I know in my state that if you can't furnish a current registration in the seller's name to provide proof of ownership, you won't get a title issued in your name without going through the bonding process.

You would like that since almost all states are in dire need of cash, they'd make it easy to get vehicles & trails on the "cash cow" roles. Silly DMV !!
