Ignition won't turn off

When I park the truck and turn it off the ignition won't return to the off position. I can't remove the key either. The engine turns off but the ignition remains in the first accessory position. Is it just my ignition switch that has gone bad?

Thx

Yes. That seems like it might be the issue. How do I fix it?

Check your trans shifter is fully in park, check your t-case shifter is fully in high or low, check your brake lights are working. If not then the lock will not release your key.

Positioned in Park.
Transfer case in 4H.

Any suggestions on how to work through this?

The brake light switch is part of the system too.

I had the identical issue. Turned out that the TC was in gear but the lever was just forward enough that the switch thought it was out of gear. Double check it.

At the advice of others here, I pried the cover off the Auto Shifter handle and sure enough, the plunger mechanism thingy was stuck in the upright "drive" position. I've sprayed all sorts of crap down it to make it fall when I shift to park but have resorted to diving her a hit of my fist when I go to remove the key. I really need to take it apart I guess.

At least you've identified the problem. That's huge.

I Figured it out. It was the button in the shifter knob. It wouldnt fully release. All is good now.
