Ignition switch woes

My 1998 300TDI is acting up. In the mornings, I have to hold the key under pressure to get the glow plugs to heat, as the switch wants to back up. On staring, again, the switch tends to back up, so I must release the key ever so gingerly, or the engine will die.

So, am I right in believing that this probably is a mechanical issue and I should get the entire lock assembly ($), or would replacing just the electrical part suffice?

Or maybe I just need to douse the whole thing with liberal amounts of WD40?

Thanks in advance for any help!

And I'm sorry to report that

No, WD40 didn't cut the mustard
