Ignition issues

It's been wicked cold here for the last few nights (-25) and the D would not start on Thursday morning. I could hear the fuel pump and the starter was working it would just not turn over. I left it and hoped the warmer weather (it was 15 today) would fix the problem. When I went to start it this afternoon the key moved back and forth freely without any resistance and any fuel pump/starter. The lights work and the accesories are also working. Any ideas what it might be? I would rather ski tomorrow than work on the truck. Thanks,

Got headlights? What's your voltage?

With temps that cold, my guess off the top would be a dead battery that was probably on the way out for a while. If it's that far gone, jump starting probably won't work either. Got another one to try?

What does 'no resistance' on the key mean? Does it feel like the ignition switch is busted?

1. Check the battery. Subpar at that temperature is suspect. I would take the battery out and charge it after it has warmed up inside. Vector or Battery Tender charging inside all night will eliminate the issue of the battery if all is working well. Sounds like turning the key full travel last try did not spin the starter or make the fuel pump work, which suggest a power related issue.

2. Fuel line issue. You mentioned that you have lights and can turn the starter. Fuel pump is humming but no juice to turn it over. At -25 something can be frozen. Can you verify that the fuel line is flowing?

3. Now you know why I live in San Diego.

Here is hoping it starts next attempt.

Hans,
It does feel like the ignition is busted/frozen. I dont know what the ignition looks like inside but the distinct sections you feel as you turn the key(acces mode/panel lights/start) are not there it just feels like a smooth barrel.

The ignition in my 94 d90 went a little while back it was the actual mechanism that the key goes in. that could be in your case... is it turning at all right now?

there are 2 parts to the ignition switch...the key/lock mechanism and the switch itself. The detents are in the switch portion. I would remove the instrument binnacle and see if the 2 halves of the switch separated...they are crimped together and may have separated in the cold. If you have really good karma, you may be able to reseat the switch halves and recrimp. If its come completely apart, you will probably need a new switch.
