81...Defender...from Spain.

I have a feeling I know where this is going. And I have a feeling you'll have a lot in common with a Series III

"Defenders" were not built until 1983. 1980 is a Series or a Santana. Provide some pictures and we can help figure out what you purchased....

1. Lots....

2. Even with a Series diesel, you should do better than 45. Not in the best condition.

3. Picture as we have no clue what vehicle you purchased....

1. Series trucks are leaf sprung and defenders have coil springs and relatively more modern interior ... there are other difference like split windscreen on a series ... possibly from spain you could have a santana which is the stepchild offspring of both.

2. How do you know it was the overdrive you were engaging ... it could have been the low ratio gears if you maxed out at 45mph.

3. you are very likely wrong on both counts ... post picture and we should be able to help.

Okay... We should take it easy before we scare the new guy away.

Post up a couple of quick pictures and we can figure out what specific model you purchased and what engine it has. We will help as much as we can.

True - the peanut gallery tends to get over excited ... there are people here who can genuinely help ... ZG despite his faults 'works' at one of the leading parts suppliers in the US ... others have a lot of experience with trucks of all shapes and sizes.
