I wish I knew the secret

Attempting to install the torque converter, and maybe I'm just having a bad day but it took me many many tries to get it to slide "home" Then once it was in place, it fell out again while I was getting ready to hoist the transmission, sending me back into another round of trying to get it lined up again. I was doing this under the truck, so of course there's no room and the thing weighs 50-60 pounds. sheesh.

Lining up the TC is tough, I feel your pain. The trick I use is before I get the transmission under the truck is I stand it on end with the bell housing up and then install the TC. Seems to work much better for me that way and I use a thin piece of wire to hold it in place while I get the trans back under th truck and lined up.

There's some hints & tips on the Ashcrofts site for installing the TC. mainly what was said above, tipping it on its end and using wire to hold it in place.

Maybe even drill a couple of (small) holes in the bellhousing to pull the wire back through. that way you can get it right up into place, pull the wire out just as the TC touches the flex plate, then seal the holes with a dollop of silicone.

Well I had to knock off for the night. I got the whole mess about 2/3 of the way up into the vehicle, but my gumption and daylight were fading away so I blocked it up. Will try again today but I am now in prayer mode on the torque converter. If it comes loose again, well, I'm back at square 1.
This is the Loob I'm working on.

Removing the input gear made it easier for me when I installed the LT230 in my Classic
