How to Disassemble Door Latch for Install

Hey folks, I feel real dumb here, but I can't for the life of my figure this out.

I've got a new rear door latch that I'm going to install on a new tailgate that I'm converting to swingaway.

Surely there is some way to detach the outer handle so that I only have to drill holes in the tailgate the width of the two barrels, right? It doesn't look like there's a c-clamp in there, the tolerances are too tight. My other thought is it's pressure fitted. I have a puller (technically for plumbers) but is that the solution for pulling the handle off, then carefully hammering back on after install?

Otherwise my options are to A) drill a big enough hole to sort of snake the handle through but then it's unnecessarily massive or B) drill out the rivets/welds on the whole unit, take it apart, then reassemble it with nuts and bolts.

Another angle for fun:

I just know there must be an easy solution for this that i'm missing that would account for why it's too obvious for there to be tutorials anywhere online!

On a normal door, there is a big hole that the latch handle goes through and sits inside a recessed area. The lock goes through its own hole.

That link shows it's possible to take the handle off. The hole is just for the barrel. I need to figure out how to get the handle off to do that very setup (plus 2nd hole for lock barrel).

Umm. Nope. That latch has no lock barrel. They made the hole large enough to get the handle through.

I know this one has no lock, but that doesn't really change the install process. And I'm still not convinced that hole is large enough to snake the handle through. The handle gets deceivingly wide at its peak.

New question, do y'all think I'd just break it if I tried to use the puller to pop it off?
