how to change headlight

hi all, did a search, nothing turned up on how to change a head light on a 97 d90 soft top. Help out there? i saw some phillips screws around the headlight but it didn't seem to loosen anything. I stopped tinkering after a couple of minutes lest i hurt the poor beast.

Oh, its great. You gotta pull of the two small lights, the surround, and then you can get at the retainer screws. You were just moving the aiming screws, so now your light will be pointing in some crazy direction.

George, what I did was just start tinkering with it.... Do one at a time, and remember where things go when you take them off. It is frustrating (British) but actually not that tough. And like Jim said, you will probably need to re-aim after install. It's not fun, but much cheaper than taking it in!

If it is just the bulb you can get to the drivers side lamp from behind by reaching under the wing with the hood open. But I think there is too much junk in the way to do this on the passenger side. Oh and as far as aiming goes, I just keep adjusting down until people stop flashing their high beams at me.

PS wing has some evap emmisions cannister or something right in front of the light. Jim C hit it on the head. I would replace your screws with stainless. The two screws behind the directional light rusted in and had to be drilled. Haven't had time to look and see if the nutsert is steel or not, but it looks like it is plastic.

Don't know if 97 is like 95 but the owners manual has diagrams for just about everything (seriously, I think how to change your brakes is even in there).

Good hardware or marine store. Depending on the application, a teflon washer also goes a long way.

Check your connections! I just had one headlight go dim from a loose connection. Pain in the ass to find and correct.

Changing them is pretty easy. After you remove the signal lights and black plastic cover, there is a set screw between 4 & 5 o'clock (as if the light were a watch and the hour hand were the screw location). If you unscrew that one screw, you should be able to give a little twist and reomve the entire lamp. I recomend replacing it with a Hella or IPF, where you can just replace the H4 bulb if it goes out again in the future, also they give you a much better beam pattern. If you were playing with the other screws, you are a bit screwed. The lamp will have to be readjusted. Get some one with a car, and use that as a marker to rebalance the beam, it should fall just to the height of the top of the trunk. I speak from experience, it took me almost an hour to readjust mine the first time I made the same mistake. Gook luck, not a big job at all.
