How noisey are the LR diesel engines?

Looking at the diesels out there in Defenders, and having only driven a 200TDi once, I was wondering just how noisy they are.

300TDi?
TDi5?
2.8PS?

Tax return is on it's way and I'm considering a swap... again. I've gone through the trouble of making my D90 somewhat quiet, but the 3.9 continues to plague me and I'm tired of the mileage (or lack thereof)...

Diesels are quite a bit louder than a petrol. plan to soundproof if its' important to you and you go that route.

I wear earplugs... it's quite

My take is that it's not THAT much nosier than the 3.9... there's a diesel clatter and the turbo whistle but meh... Among the things that'll decide if the switch is worthwhile to you or not I would tend to think this should be pretty low on your list...

I think it depends on expectations. They are louder than gas engines for sure, but I was expecting a hurricane so was pretty happy when it was not too bad. When I first got the truck it was all enclosed and I insulated it pretty well and could talk at highway speeds. But nothing like a car.

Made it further than half of the other guys, but the Hammers won.

What noise?

The engine?
The Tires?
The loose crap inside?
The parts falling off?

All of the above = priceless

At highway speeds my TD5 is significantly more quiet than the 4.6 in the 90. However, on the 90 I have a Magnaflow and TD5 exhaust is stock.

The noise level wasn't the most important decision whether or not to junk the 3.9 (the second one I've put in BTW) - really it's if I wanted the 300TDI, 2.8PS or TD5 if I decide to go diesel... in that case the noise level between those three is a factor. The newest diesels I've been in are super quiet - I've rented cars in Europe recently and couldn't really even notice they were diesel. These 'latest generation' diesels are pretty impressive.

I was guessing that the TD5 was noisier than the 300TDI but maybe not as refined as some of those auto motors.... and I have no idea about the 2.8.

But, seriously, having a conversation at highway speeds w/o losing my voice is something I need to do... I drive a lot :-)

Now that I think about it I think I drove an NA 2.5 diesel D90, not a 200TDI... no guts and pretty loud...

The 2.8 is more or less the same as a 300Tdi noise-wise.

Td5 is very livable with some decent sound proofing, the 2.4 puma is quieter still, but still not up to "eurobox" car levels, althouhg a LR will never be as quiet as a car.

I meant to say I thought the TD5 would be quieter, not noisier, than the 300TDI. Puma, hum, probably not a candidate.

I think Td5 is noiser than the Tdi, at least at low rpms.
You get more clapping with the Td5.

But my Tdi is fine tuned , so may be it's just me...

Having both I'd say the TD5 is a bit quieter at tickover but it rattles quite a bit upon acceleration. Neither are quiet. I'm at a disadvantage as the td5 is in a D1 and the 300 in a 110.. I'd still have to say the 300 is noisier.

I can tell you that the SW with the 300 is a lot quieter then the ST. On the SW, I sound proofed the shit out of it. ITs really quiet even at 65mph. My ST is loud but its a combo of the tires, no insulation on the rear tub or bonnet, etc. WHat?? What?? I can't hear you!!!
