How do you replace a speedometer cable?

Same story as everyone else...had the dash apart, put it back together, speedo not working, took it apart again and it looks like I broke the plastic piece that holds the cable to the speedometer- the housing is broken but the inner cable is still connected.

I know I can duct tape the plastic bits together and get enough tension on it to work but I was thinking I'd just replace the cable myself (famous last words).

So, how do I do that and can I get it cheaper than RN for $100?

Thanks,
Alex

Do a search on the part number. YOu can get it cheaper form places like britcar. It is easy. Cable goes through the bulkhead and attaches to the transfer case. Just follow the old and put the new in the same way

I was playing with this last weekend ... I never managed to find a cheap version and repaired mine .... But the cable goes through a bulk head grommet at the top and goes down vertically through the engine bay, it's held in place by a metal clip which you can remove it from quite easily. At the transfer case end it screws on and is easily removed by hand.

Anyone have a photo of where the cable attaches to the transfer case. In my brilliance I can't seem to see that from under the truck.

I took mine off by pulling it through the bulkhead and off the transducer on the frame rail. I replaced mine with a VDO this week and had the adapter cable made for $20. Since you only need the end replaced, if you take all the parts to a local speedo shop, I can't imagine it being much more. If you are in Denver, call Deluxe speedo and ask how much it will be.

I forgot the transducer. You should be able to find it easily.
