How do I get the ashtray out of the dash?

I know this is a really stupid question. I've tried pulling and prying. I've pulled and pried hard enough that I'm afraid I'll break something. That would make me feel more stupid than asking you guys how to do it. There might be a bit of a rust issue, if that helps to legitimize my question at all.

Thanks for not laughing at me.

I maybe wroing but I believe the ashtray has tabs on it that fold back into/under the upper dash pad. I believe you have to remove that upper dash pad to remove it.

I gave my a good pull and it came out. Youll have to bend the tabs back to get it to fit snug again.

So there's no provision for removing the ashtray to empty it? If that's the case I don't feel so stupid after all.

Thanks for the quick replies.

The ashtray pulls out.
The little metal ring is supposed to stay in the dash top, but it never does (especially if the ashtray has never been out before).
Once you have it out you pull the metal ring off and put it back in the dash pad by folding the metal tabs over again, then put the ashtray back into it.
You don't need any tools or to remove anything to empty the ashtray.

My ring is riveted to the tray. I should have taken pictures because what you describe is what I'd have expected and was surprised to see the ring permanently attached to the tray. Maybe it was a subliminal effort to stop people smoking? LOL

BTW, its clear my tabs were never bent over either. Nigelllllllllllllllllll!

The ring comes off. Yours is not riveted on, you are looking at the wrong part.
Your tabs were bent, they just straightened out when you pulled it out (like most do). Nigel got it right this time.

Images attached.

I stand corrected. My tabs really don't look like they were ever bent but you are probably right. So Captain, the answer is to pry between the ring and the tray and the tray should pop out. Use a putty knife or something flat.

Sorry to disappoint but I've only been in the game for a couple of months! Now if you want some random old Ford parts that's a different story!
