high idle

I was driving my diesel 2.5 today and I notice the idle was high. I just installed a new fuel gauge sensor so I didnt realize the tank was empty especially since the fuel tank was removed and emptied to put the gauge in(the gauge has always read full. This time I had believed the tank was full, when in truth the mechanic didn't put the fuel back in). I ended up running out of gas. I put in 5 gallons of diesel and a diesel fuel conditioner and made it home, but I still had the high idle. I recently changed the fuel pump and the mechanic had a hard time getting the air out of the lines causing stalling. He eventually got it out and I was running good until today. What are peoples thoughts on the idle?
