Not sure if our spare tire carrier was made for the Defender. We can't open the back when the spare tire is on because the latch is hidden behind the tire. If I remove the bolt holding the carrier to the back door the carrier does swing out nicely. I am looking for a creative way to latch the carrier to the back door and easily unlatch it so that I can open the back door.
Thanks for the info, but sorry if I wasn't clear. The problem I am having is that I can't get to the door latch handle to unlatch the door. The tire blocks access to it.
I have the same carrier on my truck (as I'm sure hundreds if not more do as well). Do you have unusually large hands? Can you post a pic of the tire mounted and latch area?
I run same carrier on two series trucks. Do to the paralellagram hinge condition they do need adjustment and tuning from time to time. Check all mounting are tight and that white delrin bushing needs to slide in and out freely, about 3" of play. When they work they are fantastic.
I don't have Mantec, but my LR carrier has a nut and washer behind the wheel to sandwich the wheel with the lug nuts. I do not see those in the pic. Perhaps that would improve the offset a bit and give you room. Just a thought...
In your first picture showing the studs the wheel fits on where are the three big washers one on each, stops the wheel going on to far you should have about three to four inched between the tyre and the door. Just thinking out loud.
Thanks, guys. Went to the hardware store and picked up some bolts & washers to make spacers that prevented the tire from going all the up to the door. Guess the previous owner never used the back door.
