help with odometer issues

how big of an issue is an odometer that's been replaced? I'm thinking of replacing my d90 that i sold but both the ones i'm looking at buying have odometers that have either been replaced or reported as an issue. that pretty much kills the resale value doesn't it?

one has a branded title for not actual miles and the other one is at a dealer who replaced the odometer but is exempt from odometer reporting per the car fax.

the whole true miles unknown thing and dealers saying it's not a big deal that the odometer was replaced (without documentation) because the vehicle was exempt is total BS…especially when they often try to sell the truck for the "low miles" that only the odometer shows. Is the true miles unknown truck yellow per chance and shows roughly 40,000 miles?

I personally would not purchase a truck with any odometer issues. You are only limiting your pool of buyers if/when you decide to sell it yourself. If you are questioning it now, imagine the others that will question it when you sell it.

A high percentage of 97s had the odometer blank out and a decent number of 94/95 had the odo stop at 100k.

Ignoring these trucks really limits you. I would be fine with one as long as actual approx miles was documented. ie odo replaced at x miles.

Like the curmudgeon suggested pull a carfax. The reason the speedo's were replaced was because the odometer stopped working, nothing shady about it and no other choice but to replace or remove and send off to hollywood speedo and have original repaired. Car fax should show/give some idea of the mileage before a swap was made. What I typically do is put the old gauge and new side by side on a piece of paper with the date on it and take a picture. That documents the date the swap was made and the mileage the old gauge died @.

What you perceive as the condition of the vehicle based on your inspection is probably a truer assessment than the odometer or carfax.
Just because it says 55k on a 20 year old vehicle, could easily mean it was put away 10 years ago and has all seized up.
