Help/Tips AAA Towing

Hi all. I broke down in Montreal, 350 miles from home. It was over the 3 day weekend. Nobody looked at it until Tuesday. I'd rather tow it home than have it fixed up there. My AAA membership allows for 100 miles. A good friend of mine claims his covers 200 miles.

Has anyone ever tried stacking AAA tows in tandum to get to a final destination?

i just learned that if you can get a driver out there 20 dollar bills work wonders. I had to have a vehicle towed with expired tags which is technically against their policy but a nice tip of the driver and he looked the other way.

You **can't** use multiple AAA tows for the same breakdown/incident in tandem. They usually tell you that even if you don't ask (or at least they always tell me that).

Jeff, I've been tossing that idea around for days. I just don't want to make the drive up to get it. 700 miles round trip, gas, etc. This blows.

Thanks everyone for thoughts/feedback.

I use the premium policy... AAA has never gotten over on me. That said, even with the 200 mile tow you are still looking at 150 x $3 minimum = $450. That 100 mile policy will add another $150. You can rent a truck/trailer ($?) or borrow one, pay the gas assuming 10mpg or 70 x $3.5 = $245 plus 1 night is a 'no tell' motel for $60. That's about $300 and a road trip with a friend. Add $100 for a good dinner and serious libations and you're still dollars ahead.

You have to wait like 4-5 days, but yes platinum is only like $120 TOTAL a YEAR, worth it.

Had to use AAA a few weeks back a free can of gas.

------ Follow up post added September 5th, 2014 07:35 PM ------

At $100 or so for two people on Gold, the can of gas I got the other week is the most expensive gallon I've ever had.

If you wait and let it lapse, they will send you a "please come back" rate offer that is even better.

You can also call them and tell them you want to cancel your service. I've done that with Verizon twice and got upgrades to my service and a discounted rate.

They also have rates for unemployed people ... Tell them you need to cancel because you lost your job and get bigger discounts.

If you're using two different cards under two separate accounts, shouldn't be an issue. Just don't call for the second tow while still enroute with the first. You aren't supposed to use your account (as in a single account) for multiple tows for the same incident, although it can and has been done.

When I bought my 110 I had it towed 200 miles to a body shop that I had previously called. They told me I could store it there for a couple of days. After a few days I called AAA and told them that the body shop could not repair my radiator.

FYI AAA doesn't cover for out of diesel. If you run out of diesel and call AAA, they will charge the commercial big rig rate to bring it to you, and it includes the service to bleed your fuel system, but prepared to pay a kidney.

A month ago I let myself run out like an idiot and called on it exploring options to get a couple gallons to make it to the fuel station 2 miles down the road. Better to have a flatbed tow to the fuel station then get diesel. The tow to a fuel station is covered.

Friend in the area ended up answering my call and ran me out to the station and back with my jerry. Also the reason why I always carry an empty jerry.
