Help the No0b #1(1988798)

Gents,

I've just joined the ranks of Defender owners, having stol....er.....paid a very good price for a 1984(ish) ex-military 90.

A couple weird things...

it's got a 24v idiot light in the very minimalist dash cluster, but only has one 12v battery in the box. Would that indicate a conversion at some point?

Also, it's got this odd lever, which I assume is a PTO control.

Can someone confirm that this is what this is?

(preemptive strike - YES, I searched and searched, finding a dry hole. (interpret as you will)

Thanks guys.

Ron

That lever is a hand throttle or choke if it's a petrol engine.

the plot thickens...

I did notice that i can control the throttle with it, but it's a 2.5l Diesel. odd, no? (EDIT - After reading what you said again, not so odd, apparently. a choke IF it's petrol....got it. :-)

(i posted a pic in the registry, but here's one as well. (PLEASE say nothing about the silly Dakar graphic....it's painted on there from the previous (possibly quite mad) owner.)

Have someone pull on it while you look under the hood. It's likely a hand throttle. Twist to the right to lock it in place, to the left to release.

Aye, that's exactly what it's doing. even lights up a little light on the dash.

Very quaint.

Thanks gents. Mystery solved.

Thanks for the warm, non-typical internet welcome.

Slainte.

May I suggest we all hold hands and say a silent prayer and sign a rendition of coombuya (or however that fucking irritating song is spelt) repeat after me...chicken fuckers....

At least your first post wasn't 'thinking about buying a defender, have $3000 to spend, and I don't want to search because I can't be bothered'

Welcome, cool truck, needs some eyebrows to make her whole again!

yeah, about that....

I was actually trying to not scorch the earth in my first post....I tend to polarize people, being Scottish and all. (The problem with being better than everyone else is that people tend to think you're pretentious)
They seem to think that there is some intellectual superiority related to post count, but as you guys clearly demonstrate, there is not.

This is going to be great fun, i can tell, and if not, i'll revert to the Traditional Scottish Problem-Solving method.

Hit with Rock.

Two things:
1) wow...under $5k. That is amazing...congrats.
2) so do you practice the Scottish martial arts? It's called "Fawk yhugh!"...it's essentially a bunch of head-butting and kicking people when they're on the ground.

Welcome! Per forum rules please change your quaint avatar pic for something with a mullet (not the fish).

Love the front bumper on your new 90. Talk about non-PC! Must be an MOD special of some sort? And, uh, yeah ... the front wing is wanting a proper spat. Cheers!

Less than 5K, as a Scotsman you must feel like you were ripped off.
