Unfortunately all my tools are still in Texas and won't be here until the middle of October. I watched the video and it's great! Thanks again for the help. Any suggestions on where I can get new door panels for my 1997 Defender 90 SW?

If you haven't worked on your TDI before, it's likely you still don't have the right tools. You need to get a TDI timing kit. You can get them at Rovers North or find a specific kit from multiple providers on ebay.co.uk

Thanks!

Do you think setting the timing will fix both smoking issues?

We think you need to set your timing regardless of your issues. After that's done, let's see what issues you have remaining and go from there.

Hello Overlander,

I have a question for you. When setting the iP timing, do I need to lockout the flywheel with the pin if I'm not removing the IP or can I use only the timing pin without using the locking pin for the flywheel?

Thanks in advance.

Has there been any thought to bogging down in fifth? May it also be that the gearing and tire size are part of the issue? For fifth gear at least. I know if I drop the RPM's too much in the higher gearing I will blow more black smoke. Down shift to increase RPM and the smoke goes away. Just thinking....
