Help in Columbus, Indiana

Hi, me again after more help !

We have what looks like either a clutch or Gearbox problem in the Walmart car park here in cold Indiana.

Pressing the clutch means the grinding goes away. Lifting the clutch means the grinding starts. So either a clutch bearing or gearbox input bearing. At least thats my thoughts.

Question is. Any Rover places nearby ?

R380 Manual Box on a 300Tdi.

Thanks
Neill

John at Spitz auto services has a good reputation as an independent shop that services British autos.

Haven't used him myself but he comes highly recommended.

Neill,

You're about 50 miles up I-65 from Louisville, Kentucky

Not much Defender activity in this region.

Only one real independent Defender guy in the Louisville area that I'm aware of…
His name is Luke S. and he is Lucky90 on this board and is the Defender go-to guy in Louisville. He doesn't spend much time on-line tho.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to get ahold of him after hours, but I could try if needed.

Louisville also has one Land Rover dealership --- see below for details.

The opinion on LR4x4 in the UK is its the input bearing on the gearbox so it needs taking out and fixing. However we have zero spares and limited time. This is going to get expensive !

I'll wait to see if anyone else knows of anybody. We are going to Greenville in Ohio (meant to be going) so there may be someone up there someone knows of.

Problem is, we might destroy the box in the process of getting there.

Honestly I would call PT Schram, he is one of the best. Unfortunately he is probably 5 hours from your location. I do know he has a trailer though. He would also likely have the parts in stock. (260) 804-0458 8620 E 300 N, Churubusco, IN 46723

Call pt. He it's still in business but only takes select projects. I talked to him a few weeks ago and he was willing to help me with a project. Try the office number and leave a message. He works crazy hours.

Neil, I talked to him maybe 3 days ago, and Kraig is correct he only takes on select projects now as his main business is snap-on tools now. He is a true Rover Man and I'd be willing to bet he could get you squared away.

Last year on Thanksgiving weekend he opened his shop to me so I could buy parts and got my defender going well enough with a dead cylinder to make it home. He's a rover whisperer lol

------ Follow up post added November 14th, 2013 09:14 PM ------

I just texted him the link to the thread and idea of what's going on.

We don't have a US number for him to call back. I've Emailed him. See what happens.

Theres no payphone in Walmart ! they let me use the customer services phone a while ago. I think i'm pushing my luck asking again. I will drain the box her tomorrow looking for bits and metal. I'll refil it with more oil. My head is spinning with options which none seem to get me fixed at the moment.

Thanks for helping guys....much appreciated.

Edit...thanks for texting him.

Got the number right now. I was missreading the post. I called him via skype and we've set something up. At least I think we have a way forward. He thinks it might be clutch and we should try that first.

Current Plan...
Drain the box. check for metal bits. Only done oil in it a week ago so should be clean.re-fill box.
Go to see my buddy in Greenville. slowly....
Call PT Saturday PM to let him know what the box refill outcome was.
Go up there Sunday or next week.

Glad to hear you have a plan. Paul is a great guy and a really good mechanic just don't piss off shop moggy when you get to his place.
