help diagnosing PLEASE

my 97 has lost power and I'm getting a pop gun sound coming from the engine bay around the gas pedal area. Rough idle and a misfire code. any ideas. I called my shop since I don't have the time to work on it now since I'm planing to move cross country in 2 weeks.
any direction would be appreciated.

Head gasket? Bent valve? Do you have a compression tester.

Did anything happen before it started doing this? Or you just went out to start it up, and this is what it's doing?

had a long trip over up and down some steep hills over the weekend with no issues even towing a trailer. sat for a day then I went to go 3 miles and i was getting the rough ride on the way back up the hill to my place i started to feel the popping. It's been idling low lately. no missing though.

02 Sensor? Sounds like an issue I just had with my Classic. Check your connectors and wiring to make sure nothing is cut or melted.

I looked at the sensors couldn't see anything. I cant get it to pop unless driving under strain, (up hill) so I can't see where its coming from.
I'm sending her up to UK Motors LTD. Andrew has always been good to me, I have a few things I wanted done before the drive across country anyway so I will have him fix this and check everything else. I am just running out of time, moving truck comes on the 28th. oh and the driveway being 110 degrees is no fun to be laying on. Did I say I can't wait to be in Ventura,

Thanks guys I will let you know what it ended up being.
any other ideas to get me tallying up figures in my head. So far I'm looking at at least a grand.

My truck had the exact same symptoms. Popping increased under load especially at higher RPMs. Noticed it most emanating from the intake. Ended up being a worn out cam lobe and tappet. Wasn't opening an exhaust valve on one of the cylinders. Happened out of nowhere. Mine is a 95. I guess you could pull the valve covers and turn it over. see if everything is moving.
