Help! Broken dipstick on road

My wife and daughter are driving from Phoenix to Jacksonville FL in our "86" Ninety ex-MoD with the 2.5D N/A.

She is in Eastland TX, went to check the oil and found this problem.

I've told her to clean off the tube sticking out of the block, make a plug to go in the hole then wrap Gorilla Tape to seal it off. That will get her on the road but makes checking the oil a REAL pain.

1. Is there someplace she can buy a replacement dipstick tube in the Dallas area?

1a. Does anyone know if this dipstick tube is specific to the 2.5D or will a tube from some other LR fit?

2. Can anyone quickly recommend a welding shop that can braze the broken tube?

Thank you,

Mike

When you are having dipstick failures, it's time to invest in some preventative maintenance. Please don't let this issue get out. We Rover enthusiasts are already taking enough ribbing.

Dipstick is not pressurized at all. In their shoes, I would just slip a rubber hose on it to keep it together with some hose clamps, and replace it when they get there.

Try RDS or Rovahfarm. I know there are local clubs in Texas. I was to say the dipstick and dipstick tube should apply to multiple engines so there shouldnt be a problem with finding one.

Dip stick is not pressurized, but if she wants to weld, here's how:

Give that man a cigar! I was thinking of a metal tube and brazing. A rubber tube and hose clamps will get her on the road in 1/2 hour. She even has an O'Reilly across the street!

Thanks!

Mike

Good luck. she can use a zip tie or wire to tie off the upper floppy piece.

I will check with these places and others. I'd be surprised if a city the size of Dallas doesn't have a classic LR supplier.

Mike.

Right.

I'd pay $20 to watch you try to weld a dipstick tube using a battery.

Mike.

Congratulations on having a great wife! She is a keeper. My ex wouldn't ride in my defender to the store much less drive one across the country and make repairs as nessary. Good job.

An hour and a half and $3.50 in parts. Hard to complain.

Awesome. There should be an award for this kind of thing. She gets my vote!

To bring closure to this issue Carrie stopped at Down South Rover and had the new dipstick tube installed. Only $14 for the part. And she picked up some other parts I've been wanting.
