It's just the engineer in me, I personally would take it part to do it and have done so, there is no way you know for sure you got all the swarf out.

As for it blowing out the tail pipe yes but it first has to pass the exhaust turbine and the dump Vv

But each to their own

Shayne, as your number 1 fan I looked and saw your pics. They helped.

Jonsey, i'll take some pics tonight. Nothing special. Looks like this one (stolen from the web)
But between 3&4 not 1&2.

They did it with the manifold on, so far no issues(about 1000 miles driven).

I did it on the after turbo side... Some say to do it before the turbo.. Supposedly reads higher before turbo than after by 1-200 degrees.... Doing it after turbo is muuuuch easier.. No problems with dwarf etc..

yeah but aren't you supposed to be concerned about the gas temp that is going into your turbo? Not out of it?

If the gases after turbo are too high then there's a fairly good chance the gases before it are too high... Turbo can't generate more heat into gases.. As mentione.. After turbo is about 1-200 degrees cooler... I still see a nice rapid response to turbo temps when pulling hard etc... If it starts getting too high---1200 degrees I back off" but haven't had to yet,,, not even pulling up from Skagway Alaska"

The nice thing about Shayne and his big head is that he knows it so telling him doesn't affect the size. Although I hear rumors he had to get a bigger rig to fit it in

John, thanks for the post! Just finished tapping mine in the same location. Worked like a charm. Of note, was able to do it in place without removing anything. Started out drilling it and then before punching through started up the engine which blows the swarf out the hole as you are drilling it out. Drilled a progressive hole, and worked up to the 11/32's.

Just ordered EGT gauge. Removing my turbo and manifold to do a headgasket. Thinking about welding a bung instead of tapping since it is apart anyway. Thoughts? Goal is to put it in a the 4-1 collector area.

Which cylinder on 200tdi's runs the hottest? #4?

Just drill and tap the manifold below the outlet flange. The thermocouple gets the flow from all cylinders. 1/4" NPT. No point making life hard by trying to weld something onto a cast iron manifold. You ruin it, you can't replace it... There is a lot of meat for tapping.

Cool. I will just put it in the 4-1 collector. Yea welding to cast is far from ideal, but figured it would be "cleaner". Tap it is.

We used to put EGT gauges on Subaru's on the leanest cylinder (#4 due to their factory fuel rail design). That is why I was asking about that.
