Hella 500 replacement

Hi,

I have an existing set of Hella 500s mounted to the front of my truck from when the truck was new 13 years ago. The dealer installed them as something I wanted on the truck with the purchase. It goes to a Rover togel switch on the steering column (just opposite - and similar in look to the main headlights switch). They are driving lights and come on with the high beams.

They both still work. One is finally rusting apart. I have electrical tape holding the lense on. The other does not look great. Time to replace them both.

Question:
I assume that I do not need to do any re-wiring through the engine and can just replace the light unit? In otherwords (not being an electrical expert), has anything changed in the wiring of Hella 500s in the last 13 years - or are they the same and I just hook them up to the existing wiring?

Just got a catalouge from British Atlantic with a winter sale - New pair of Hella 500 Driving Lights for $62.95. That sounds like a good price - but I have not bought lights for a while. Should I go for it?

Thanks,

Flagg

Walmart sells them too, then you do not have to pay shipping or wait.

But, were it me, I would go with the new hella 4000 compact.

I think those 500s are mickey mouse and not worth it, get the 4000 compact if you like the smaller size.

It is always AMAZING how fast you can get some responses on this board! THANKS!

You guys are really down on the Hella 500s! That is what I have used all these years and always noticed a difference with the high beams when switching on and off. I did not think they were THAT bad, especially for the price. BUT I guess I do not know how good the new stuff is.

SO TELL ME - if I upgrade can I use my same wiring and switch?

Keep in mind the 4000s are 100+ watt bulbs whereas the 500s are 55 watt. Make sure the wiring is up to snuff before you upgrade.

I have my 4000's wired in using what RN said was a 4000 harness, it turned out not to be, and caused me some hassles - but that was solved when Mike Hippert installed the correct size fuse. So the fuse size is probably the main thing. I cut off the included switch and used the stock LR one mounted on the right side of the column that you describe. Everything is fine.

Its not that we're down on 500's, any extra light is nice when you need it, but fire up a pair of 4000's and you will swiftly kick those little plastic lights to the curb. I'm running an old pair of 4000's that Yusef ran for years before I had them. Indestructible.

The 500 harness is a POS. The wiring is not the same gauge as the normal hella harness. The normal hella harness seems to be ok for hgiher watage, but the pos that came with the 500s I would worry about.

So what I am hearing is if you just want to replace your lights, take a trip to Walmart, swap them out and be done with it.

If you want to upgrade, be ready to spend a lot more and you had better rewire it! Project time?

Just a friendly PSA from someone with too many projects
