Headlamp switch out

Is this a common issue or just simply random? When I removed the guard it looks like its been replaced before.

Common. The contacts in the switch get hot and melt the plastic. You can eliminate the problem by rewiring the circuit so the headlights get their feed through a relay and the switch just controls the relay.

Is there a way to fix the existing one? The parking lamp selection still works but when you switch it further to the headlamps everything turns back off.

If you wanted a cheaper alternative, you could buy an aftermarket replacement...

Eventually it will die like your current one, re-wiring the headlights through a relay would be a good investment. There are many threads on here explaining how to do it.
