Hannibal rack installation help

I bought a used Hannibal rack and cannot figure out how to attach it to my SW. I understand that it's a gutter mount, i.e., the rack sits in the gutter of the roof capping and mounts using the triangle-shaped attachments. I assume that the mounting pieces pull upwards on the underside of the capping but I can't figure out how to do this. I put the rack on the truck and attempt to insert the bolt from the mounting piece into the receptacle on the rack but the bolt is not long enough to reach out the top so I can attach the nut and tighten it down.

I'm wondering if I have the wrong mounting hardware for the rack or I'm just having a brain cramp (Notre Dame is on its way to a 0-3 record so I'm a little fuzzy right now.) I've attached some pictures and you can see that I have six of those triangle-shaped mounts but I can only see where four of them would attach (two on each side roughly at each end of the porthole in the roof.) How I would attach the front mounts is a total mystery but I've been told that the four at the middle and rear of the rack would be suffcient to keep the rack secured.

Anybody got any ideas?

Hey Gary,

It looks like you're trying to fit the rack when the les supports are already attached to it.

When I had my Hannibal it needed to be assembled with the three supports put in place first (with the gutter clamps (loosely fitted). Then once the three supports were in place I then installed the rack on top an bolted it down to the three support cross bars.

Thanks Will, that makes sense. I'll try it today.

Follow-up Post:

I disassembled the rack to try and attach just the rails with the gutter mounts and am still stuck. I'm either not getting how it attaches to the roof or have the wrong mounting hardware.

I've attached three photos; one that shows the rail sitting in the gutter. I'm assuming this is how it is supposed to go but right now I'm trying not to assume anything. The second photo shows how I think the mounting piece should work and the third shows that the threaded rod attached to the mounting piece is not long enough to attach to the bottom of the gutter and protrude through the top of the rail receptacle for me to thread a nut on it.

Somebody please call me a dumbass and tell me where I'm screwing up.

Hey Gary - It looks like you're doing it right. Take a look at the pic I've attached. I wonder/bet that you probably have the wrong gutter clamps - maybe they were mis-matched at the distributer? Did you buy new or used? My guess is new, and you are the first to attempt mounting the rack.

Take a look at how far up my threaded rods go through...

Thanks Will. That picture confirms that I have the wrong type of mounts. I bought it used and will check around to see where I can get the correct ones.

I have the older style rack; the sides of the rack do not come off, and there are no runners down the middle of the long slats for the flooring. That said, I wonder if maybe your version just has a newer look to the mounts, but - maybe the rack was on a different vehicle? Not a Defender SW?

I wonder if the current mounts could be exteded? Cut the old threaded part off, and weld a new longer piece on...then re-paint?

Extending the mounts is a good idea but not something I can do. I'll see if I can find somebody to do it for me. Thanks again.
