GPS in 2010

I was reading a old thread from 2007 on the best unit but what about today? I would like one to use in my 90 and possibly while hiking - I assume I would get more use out of it rather then leave it in the car - so what would you guys choose? I read alot about the garmin and the delorme and spatial minds but have no idea what you would choose? my budget is in the 200 - 400 range unless I cant get something worth it for that amount of cash

any help would be great -

My brother has one he swears by that is in the $800 range. I prefer a map and a sense of direction. State farm gives me a new one every year. I think my brothers is a Garmin.

I have yet to find one that really multi-tasks like that very well... battery life becomes an issue for hiking GPSs which is fine for hiking but if you have it on very often in the car they burn out quicker than you can imagine...

I've settled on the Garmin Nuvi 500/550 series as it will take trail maps as well as being a good on-road navigator. Most do one or the other well...

Get a low end, wide screen Nuvi for the car. Only around $100 including maps. For hiking, there is a lot more choose and cost. A good low cost option would be a Garmin etrex Legend HCX or a Delorme Pn-30.

All in ones are too much of a compromise.
