German Couple on Tour of Americas need advice

Sorry guys for the outlandish thread title. I met this wonderful German couple doing a year long trip of North/South America in their kitted 2002 TD5 110. They're having wheel bearing issues, and after we tore it down, we noticed the stub axle has some wear/groove on it. Not huge, but a noticeable bump as you run your hand over the shaft. I realize it's hard over pictures, but do you all recommend replacement or will you bet 15/20k more miles on this? They'd be stranded here till at least Thursday if we overnights parts, hence the question. Thanks...

Just replace the bearings and the seal behind the hub.
Readjust the preload to the pre TD5 period, just saying Tdi 300.

Thanks all. We're reassembling with new seals, bearings, races, and will pre-position a stub axle along their route. Probably somewhere in Utah.

If you're not replacing the stub, just pack the bearings with that nasty marine grease and put it back together. Put the new parts on when it can be done right.

Where are they now and what's the route through UT?

I have a pair of surplus stubs in Durango, CO. I'm headed to SE Utah on Thursday

They're staying out with us near Boise. They haven't figured out the route south, they'd like to stay off hard ball roads as much as possible. I'll ask if they'd like to link up with you, but timing would probably not work. I was leaning towards GBR as a possible mailing point for them, but they may just try to ride it out as well.

They may be joining the forums as well shortly. Thanks all for your replies.

Bill's a good resource. I'm happy to help out if they desire.

Seems like every summer Bill has several overlanders pop in and take care of some maintenance. As a result i get to meet some really cool people.
