as far as I can remember you should be able to get it to mate up, but the bellhousing on the r380 is much longer than on the lt77 as the engines normally fitted with r380s sit further forward in the chassis. Without alteration the gearbox would therefore be in the wrong position in the chassis meaning both propshafts would have to be altered and the gear sticks would be in the wrong position too

Hey Keith, Not too sure on the LT77 to R380 swap, but they do them all the time over here and the engine and the T-case stay in the same place. So I would think that with the proper bell housing you can just swap the 2. But over here we alll run V8s I don't know if it's a different story.

The pic of your motor can be added by going into the User CP and uploading an image for your avatar. But make sure the image is less then 100x100 pixles. If you have any trouble send me an e-mail or PM and I'll fix it right up

I think you can swap the bellhousing but not 100% certain would be worth having a look ie getting both boxes side by side. Since the lt77 is knackerd and has to come out any way you have nothing to loose

I have attached 2 pics of my 90 in bits first with2.5 NA diesel and LT77box(unfortunately the bulkhead was still on when I took the shot so its not as clear as the second pic) , the second shows 300TDi engine with r380 box. You can hopefully see how much furter forward the engine sits

Follow-up Post:

I think it should be possible, you will probably have to swap bellhousing and gearbox input shafts from the lt77 to the r380 though

Keith, Iíve got a similar problem. I have a 93 NAS Defender 110 with a bad LT77S. Iím trying to swap it with a R380 from a Disco but itís not working out right. Iíve been told I need a completely different R380, and Iíve been told that a shifter from a R380 Defender will solve my problem. Iíve got a shifter from an R380 Disco I could swap with you if your R380 trans has a Defender shifter. Let me know what you think.

I do not believe that you can put the r380 behind the 200TDi. The input shaft for the 200Tdi is about 6 inches shorter. I also do not think you can swap the 200Tdi input shaft into the R380...I believe that, among other things, the tooth count is incorrect. Your best bet would be to trade the R380 for the correct LT77.

Rob, can you clue me in on what I need to do. I had the previous post about Swapping an LT77S out of a NAS D110 and installing an R380 from a Discovery. Any ideas how I can make this thing work?

I think the only way to get it to fit is to remove your doors and safety devices roll cage and sell them to me at a dramatically cut rate.

I think I need to work on my powers of persuasion.

Seriously, Corey - how 'bout you start a new thread with some pix - the trans should be the same, but I cant rightly indicate the truth about the shifter. The correct shifter for the Defender r380 does locate the shifter several inches forward from the opening in the top of the gearbox. I know there are also a number of bellhousings involved. ECR had a truck on their site that had this conversion done wrong and the input shaft from the trans didnt slide all the way into the clutch and after a while the whole assembly ate itself.

Corey,
You can put an R380 in place of the LT77 in your NAS 110. You will need an R380 V8 Bellhousing, an R380 set up for a V8 Defender, a new shifter knob, and new diff lock linkage for the t-box. The Defender and Discovery R380s are very similar but not interchangable. The shifter housing is different, as is the shift rod inside the transmission as well as the shift quadrant. There is a minor difference in the 5th gear ratio as well. You could convert your Discovery R380 to a Defender style, but it will require the parts listed and a complete strip down of the gearbox to install. If you've got an r380 bellhousing already, you are ahead of the game. My suggestion would be to swap your Disco R380 for the Defender R380 that you need. I've got a rebuilt Defender R380 in stock and ready to go as well as the linkage and shifter parts you require. The only thing I don't have is the shifter knob. Call me at the shop tomorrow. The number is 505-872-7818 and we can discuss this in further detail.
