Gear shift rod angle

I installed a radio in the a console (Iron Goat) in the dash and moved the rear wiper/ washer switch to the same console. When I shift into reverse my knuckles hit the wiper switch.

Is there any way to move the shift rod back or bend it back?

LT77 transmission.

Heat up one of the bends with a torch and bend it away from the dash a bit.

The shifter lever is easily removed by popping the shift boot and removing the nut that holds it to the shift shaft. The shifter is meant to be adjustable for a mans stature. If yours is hitting the dash it sounds like the previous owner may have been smaller and has oriented the shifter so it was more reachable. That said, also easily bent once in a vice as Dave says above.

There is no need for a torch to bend one.
