gas guage bouncing around

Gas guage started bouncing around last week for no reason. I didn't hit it around or call it names.
I am hoping it is the guage on not some mysterious ground. Anyone else have this problem and found out it was the guage or did you end up having a bad sending unit in the tank?
Thank you in advance,
Clay

Keith,
Do you mean bounce around or go bad? Mine has never bounced around before in the 6 years I have owned it. All other guages are still acting fine, just the gas guage is going bananas.

Are you sitting still at a light, or weaving through traffic when it happens? Mine jumps off a cliff when I turn left around a corner.

Thanks guys. Yep should clarify. Normally up to last week the guage would drift with turns as the fuel sloshes from side to side, no more than expected.

But last week it now will bounce around from empty to half a tank, going back in forth in the meantime, inconsistent with any movement in the vehicle.

I could see it being a faulty ground issue if it followed some pattern or just went dead altogether as the sender is activated by negative (ground) resistance. but doesn't quite seem to follow the pattern and I can's see the float sinking the unsinking for no apparent reason unless it is a magic float ball.

bouncing. most gas gauges bounce. i think 97s tend to bounce more - not sure why though. very rarely do they go bad.
