Galvanising ST door frames

I have stripped the skins from my ST doors (actually they are SIII doors), and am considering having the frames galvanised. Has anyone tried this and what was your result? I imagine that I will see a bit of distortion, but I'm hoping it will not be so excessive that I cannot re-straighten the frames.

Any thoughts?

why not ? I'm sure others will chime in but I think quenching ( the cold dip to cool the parts when they come out of the hot galvy tank) is when most of the distortion happens. Maybe if you ask that the parts be left to air cool this could be avoided/minimized.

Matt Hurst, who used to be very active on this board, did a restoration on his D90. I ended up buying his truck. He galvanized virtually everything you could and replaced what you couldn't with stainless or replaced it.

I know he tried to do a similar thing on the front doors but unfortunately could not make it work. He eventually aborted that and had to buy a new set of doors. I believe the problem was he couldn't get the skin to recrimp properly and didn't like the way it turned out. You may want to PM him if he responds.

If he couldn't make it happen I can't imagine who could as he had a lot of talent with this stuff. You can look up his threads.

Wise Owl used to sell galvy door frames, I think they stopped selling them for lack of interest but it can be done.

Matt Browne has done it, God bless his patience.

I saw 2 sets of solid cast aluminum doors last weekend, amazing to hear a Lightweights door close with a solid thunk. Fellow in Canada makes them.

I do this on pretty much all new builds. Even with SW (roll-up) doors and rear doors and bonnet frames, and bulkheads....and yes they can be painted after.

I don't need anywhere close to as much medication now as I did to do it the first time.

Simon, who's last name I don't know, makes them. Things of beauty I tell you. If you check with OVLR's I'm sure someone can put you in touch. He made a set for his 101FC and some series ones as well.

Simon Schofield is his name. He lives about an hour west of Toronto. I can provide contact details for anyone that may be interested in a pair of his doors. They are really sweet.

I actually did a cheesy writeup a long time ago on galv. door skins and re-skinning them. I think its in D-90 heaven though. Chris might still have it.

It's nothing special but might help out a bit.. I'm no actor or writer but it gives you the basics.. Maybe CVC still has it in the d-90 Basement tapes..
