Front Runner Slimline Rack on NAS 90 (Front Cage Issue)

Been reading lots of threads on the FR Slimline Rack, most of which are several years old, but I can't seem to find a conclusive answer to if anyone has solved the mounting on the cage issue with the front-cage of a NAS 90 (as the legs can't reach the gutter due to the cage).

There was something from Manimal saying he'd designed a mount but couldn't find anyone to fabricate it that sounded most promising.

Has anyone figured out a solution?

To solve it you're going to have to fabricate something. You can find the weld on roll bar steel clamps on eBay so you do not have to fabricate those. Make sure the height is level with whatever FR rack foot you decide to go with (same height). Defenders Northwest also has a roll cage clamp that could work for you. Check their website.

Here's the fix. This will work if you are using the short Front Runner mounting legs (220mm) for the other 4 legs.
Front Runner FRONT leg for the LR3/4 roof rack & a GenRite 1-3/4" tube clamp.
The base of the LR3/4 FRONT leg is steel, weld it to the GenRite 1-3/4" tube clamp.
Shorten the bottom of the LR3/4 leg by ~1/2", drill a hole in it & attach to the base.
Be sure to contact FR by phone, they willing exchanged the LR3/4 legs for the 220mm's at no additional charge.

@viton - called front runner today and they said the LR 3/4 legs won't work as they are laser cut and one peice. Sounded like this was a change in design. Maybe you used and older generation? They didn't offer any advice due to the "variation in cage widths" and said need to be custom fit.

Guess I'll have to make my own

I have two of these clamps if anyone wants them. New in box. I thought I needed them to put my surf rack on my truck but I was able to do it without messing with the roll bar. You might able to fashion a no weld solution

How far off the roof does the front runner rack come off the roof? I want one but I need to be able to clear my garage entrance.

Is it 10 inches? Or is it 10 inches from the rails. If so does anyone know the height difference from rails to highest roof point?

Adam, check out the ARB rack in person if you've never seen one on a 90. It fits, imo, like a glove and looks like it belongs on a 90. All the feet, front to back mount to the rain gutter. Jimmy in Brooklyn I believe has one on his truck.

Cool ill take a look. My buddy has a Front Runner on his Tacoma. While I think it looks a little weird I love how flexible it is. They make so many nice mounts for it for various items (high lift, surfboards yadda yadda). They even have a vertical surfboard mount so you can still load the rack up with other stuff. Also it is pretty low profile which I need due to my height requirements. My truck JUST makes it in with the current Thule cross bars on it.

Edit: Yea that ARB is sharp looking. Can the side rails come off? That is my only chance of making the garage.

Not on the models I've seen. They take a beating. I've seen them rubbed up against trees on tight trails with no damage. Tools and storage I'm sure they have mounting apps but boards I agree you probably want a flat rack.

Adam, I measured mine with the standard/non-high rack. From the floor of the gutter to the to of the rack is 10 5/8". I hope this give you something to work with. I would suggest verifying your truck is level and use the highest point.
