Front quarter panel dents question

I have noticed that a good amount of ROW defenders have dents on their front quarter panels. The dents are always in the same place. They are usually located in the middle top...above the wheel wells.

Just curios if anyone knows why this is. Maybe from ropes and storing equipment on the bonnet? Or maybe a likely spot to hit a tree while on the trail?

Yep. When the tire on the other side goes up that small rock/stump you did not see, that 1" clearance you thought you had is gone.
Another way is sliding down sideways just a tad but just enough to kiss that tree trunk.
Obviously... I have no idea!

Ladder theory: climb the tire, stand on the fender. Im not sure why these things get stood on so much. And tread plated become a chicken/egg argument.
