Frayed Belt

Had another wonderful issue today with the main belt fraying, I got on the highway and noticed it but then went away until about 5 miles in. Drove another 8 miles on it and when I pulled off and checked it there was noticeable fraying. I immediately had it flat towed. What I am curious about is whether it is probably caused by something else (a pulley?) wearing out and doing this. I ran the AC for a good 2 hours last week on a long drive and never run the A/C, might this have done it?

Check the water pump and alternator to see if the bearings have failed. I would be on the water pump.
